Lovable vs Claude Code: which should a beginner use?

Prices, limits and features from Lovable's and Anthropic's own pricing pages and docs, checked Oct 28, 2026. Sources below.

Short answer: these are two different kinds of tools. Lovable is an app builder in your web browser. You describe a website or web app in plain English, and Lovable builds it, hosts it, and can add a database and user logins for you. It has a $0 plan. Claude Code is Anthropic's coding agent. It works on a code project on your computer (or in a cloud session), reads the files, edits them and runs commands. It doesn't host your site, and it isn't on Claude's free plan. If you've never coded and want something live this week, start with Lovable. If you already pay for Claude, or want the code in your own hands, Claude Code makes more sense. Cheapest paid plans today: Lovable Pro is $25 a month for 100 credits, Claude Pro (which includes Claude Code) is $20 a month. You can also use both: build the first version in Lovable, then sync it to GitHub and keep going in Claude Code.

Side-by-side breakdown

LovableClaude Code
What it isA browser app builder. Lovable calls itself "an AI software engineer" that lets you "chat to instantly build websites and web apps, with no technical knowledge needed."Anthropic's "agentic coding tool that reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands, and integrates with your development tools."
Where it runsIn your web browser, at lovable.dev. Nothing to install. The terminal, VS Code and Cursor extensions, JetBrains IDEs, a desktop app (Mac and Windows; Linux in beta), and the web at claude.ai/code
Who it's forPeople who never want to look at code and want a website or web app online fastPeople who already pay for Claude, or want the code on their own computer and are OK learning a little about how a project works
Free tierYes, $0: 5 build credits a day (up to 30 a month), 20 Cloud credits a month for hosting and the backend, and a daily chat allowanceNo. Claude's Free plan doesn't include Claude Code.
Cheapest paid plan (checked Oct 28, 2026)Pro, $25/month for 100 credits, or $250 a year (about $21 a month). You still get the 5 daily credits, with no monthly cap on Pro.Claude Pro, $20/month, or $17/month if you pay $200 for a year. Claude Code is included.
Next plan upMore Pro credits ($50/month for 200, $100 for 400, and up), or Business from $50/month for 100 creditsMax, from $100/month, with 5x or 20x Pro's usage
HostingBuilt in. Click Publish and your app is live at a yourapp.lovable.app address. Your own domain needs a paid plan.None. Claude Code writes the files; you choose a host and put the site there (Claude Code can help you with the steps).
Database and loginsBuilt in. Lovable Cloud adds a database, user logins, file storage and functions, built on Supabase's open-source foundation. Not built in. Claude Code can write the code for a database or logins, but you sign up for those services yourself.
Code ownership and exportLovable says "you own what you create." Two-way GitHub sync works on every plan, including Free. Downloading a ZIP and editing code inside Lovable need a paid plan. The code is plain files in a folder on your computer from day one. Nothing to export.
Rules file it readsProject Knowledge (Project settings > Instructions, up to 10,000 characters), plus Workspace Knowledge. It also reads a root AGENTS.md if your synced repo has one.CLAUDE.md in the project folder. If there's no CLAUDE.md, it reads AGENTS.md instead.

Prices are per month in US dollars, before tax, from each company's own pricing page or docs. A Lovable credit and a Claude usage limit are different things, so don't compare them directly. See costs in plain words.

Pick this if...

Pick Lovable if

Pick Claude Code if

Be honest with yourself about the terminal. Claude Code's main version runs in a terminal window. Anthropic's docs include a terminal guide for first-timers, and the desktop app and the web version (claude.ai/code) skip the terminal, but you're still working with a code project. If that sounds like too much right now, start in Lovable. You can add Claude Code later without starting over.

Lovable

We go deeper on this in Lovable credits explained.

Claude Code

Start in Lovable, then move to Claude Code

You don't have to pick one forever. One path that fits beginners: get the first version working and online in Lovable, then bring in Claude Code once you want more control. Here's how it fits together, from both companies' docs:

  1. Connect GitHub in Lovable. In Project settings > Git, connect GitHub. Lovable creates a repository and keeps it in two-way sync with your project. This works on the free plan.
  2. Copy the repo to your computer and open the folder in Claude Code. Keep Lovable on its branch (usually main) and pull before you start, so the two don't edit over each other.
  3. Add a CLAUDE.md. Run /init in Claude Code and it writes a starter CLAUDE.md from your code. Then add your own rules (example below). Anthropic suggests keeping it under 200 lines.
  4. Share one rule file between both tools if you like. Lovable always reads a root AGENTS.md, and Claude Code reads AGENTS.md when there's no CLAUDE.md. Or put @AGENTS.md at the top of your CLAUDE.md to pull it in. Our AGENTS.md vs CLAUDE.md guide explains the choice.
  5. Your Lovable hosting and backend can stay put. Lovable's docs say you can keep the built-in backend while working on the code elsewhere, and only move parts when you hit a real limit.

There's also a shortcut the other way: Lovable runs an MCP server that lets Claude Code drive your Lovable projects (create projects, send messages to Lovable, deploy). Lovable says it works on all plans. In Claude Code you add it with claude mcp add --transport http lovable "https://mcp.lovable.dev". Those calls use your real Lovable credits and edit real projects, so start small.

How to give each tool your project rules

Both tools let you write your rules down once, so you don't have to say "don't touch the other pages" in every message.

Lovable: Project Knowledge

Open Project settings > Instructions and paste your rules into the Project Knowledge field (up to 10,000 characters). Lovable includes it with every message. Rules that should apply to all your projects go in Workspace Knowledge instead. A short starter:

Lovable Project Knowledge (Project settings > Instructions)
About this app: [one sentence: what it is and who it's for].
Version 1 only needs to: [the ONE thing it must do].

How to work:
- Change only what I ask for in each message. Leave other pages alone.
- For anything bigger than a small change, use Plan mode first and wait for my OK.
- Keep the current design: same colors, fonts and layout.
- Users can only see and change their own data.
- Secret API keys never go in front-end code.
- When you finish, tell me what changed and how to check it.

More examples in our Lovable Project Knowledge guide.

Claude Code: CLAUDE.md

Put a CLAUDE.md file in your project's main folder (or in .claude/CLAUDE.md). Claude Code reads it at the start of every session. Anthropic's docs say Claude treats it as guidance, not a hard lock, so keep the rules short and clear. A short starter for a project that came from Lovable:

CLAUDE.md (project root)
# CLAUDE.md

## About this project
- A small web app for [who it's for] that lets them [the main thing it does].
- Started in Lovable and synced to GitHub. Lovable still edits the main branch.

## How to work
- Explain your plan before you change anything big, and wait for my OK.
- Make one small change at a time, then tell me how to test it.
- Don't add new packages without asking me first.
- Never put API keys or passwords in the code. Use environment variables.
- Don't change the database structure without asking me first.

## Commands
- Install: npm install
- Run locally: npm run dev
