Short answer: both build a working web app with login and a database from plain English, and both have free plans. Pick Lovable if design matters most to you, or you may want to move the code to GitHub and keep building in Cursor or Claude Code. Pick Base44 if you want an all-in-one app (internal tools, portals, simple business apps) with built-in integrations and as little setup as possible. Not sure? Credits aren't the same unit on both sites. A Lovable credit and a Base44 message credit cover different amounts of work, so compare by building the same small thing, not by the numbers.

Pick Lovable if…

You care how it looks. Lovable's prompting guide is built around design: style keywords, component-by-component building, editing elements right in the preview.
You might move to code later. Sync to GitHub, then keep going in Cursor or Claude Code with the same rules (how).
You want step-by-step learning material. Lovable's docs include a prompting guide, a prompt library and a debugging guide.

You're building a practical tool: a client portal, a booking or inventory app, an internal dashboard.
You want connections to everyday tools (Base44 lists Gmail, Slack, Notion, Google Drive and more) without wiring them yourself.

Either way, watch out for

Credit-burning fix loops. After one failed fix, ask for causes instead of another attempt.
Data other users can see. Check who can read each table before launch: row-level security in Lovable, data permissions in Base44. Our security checklist covers both.
Prices set in the browser. Make sure payments are confirmed by the payment provider, not by a "success" page.

Need a phone app or a bot instead?
