Base44 vs Replit: which app builder should a beginner use?
Short answer: both let you describe an app in plain English and get a working app with a database and user logins, and both have a $0 plan. Base44 is the simpler one. It's a no-code builder where the database, logins and hosting are already there, and even free apps get a free .base44.app address, with no time limit we could find in its docs. It fits internal tools, client portals and simple business apps. Replit is closer to a real coding setup in the browser. It can build more kinds of things (web and mobile apps on the free plan, plus slide decks, data visualizations and more on paid plans), and it's the easier one to take your code away from. But its free published app goes offline after 30 days. Cheapest paid plans today: Base44 Starter is $16 a month billed yearly, Replit Core is $20 a month (or $18 a month billed yearly).
Side-by-side breakdown
| Base44 | Replit | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A "no-code AI platform." You describe the app and it builds the front end, back end, database and logins for you. | An AI platform where you describe what you want, then "create, launch, and grow apps, sites, tools, and businesses in one place." Its Agent writes real code you can see and edit. |
| Who it's for | People who never want to look at code and want a practical tool: a booking app, a portal, a dashboard | People who want more control, or want to learn how the code works, or plan to move the code somewhere else later |
| Free tier | Yes, $0: 25 message credits a month (up to 5 a day), 100 integration credits, up to 5 apps. Logins, database and analytics are included. | Yes, the Starter plan, $0: daily Agent credits up to a monthly cap, Lite build only, and 1 published app that goes down after 30 days |
| Cheapest paid plan (checked Oct 27, 2026) | Starter, $16/month billed yearly: 100 message credits and 2,000 integration credits a month. Base44 says yearly billing saves 20%; check their pricing page for the monthly price. | Core, $20/month, or $18/month billed yearly: $20 a month of credit toward stronger models, up to 30 hours of chat on Free Mode, Plan Mode, unlimited published apps |
| Next plan up | Builder, $40/month billed yearly: 250 message credits, GitHub sync, code download, AI model choice | Pro, $100/month, or $90/month billed yearly: more Free Mode usage, $100 toward stronger models, up to 15 collaborators |
| Hosting and publishing | Every app is live on a free yourapp.base44.app address. Custom domain from Starter up, plus a free domain for a year on yearly plans. | Publishing is on every plan, but Starter gets only 1 app and it goes down after 30 days. Core lifts that to unlimited. Publishing is paid from your credits. |
| Database and logins | Built in: data tables, plus ready-made login, sign-up and password reset pages (email, Google and others) | Built in: a PostgreSQL database comes with every app, and Agent can add Replit Auth or Clerk Auth for you |
| Code export and ownership | Base44 says you own your code and data. Downloading the code (ZIP) or two-way GitHub sync needs the Builder plan or higher, and the exported code "still relies on Base44 to run." | Download any project as a ZIP from the file tree. Replit's Git tools can also push your code to GitHub. |
| Rules or instructions it reads | Custom Instructions in the AI chat (one rule per line) | replit.md in the project root, plus Custom Instructions for your whole Workspace |
Prices are per month in US dollars, before tax, from each company's own pricing page. A Base44 message credit and a Replit credit are different units, so don't compare the numbers directly. See credits in plain words.
Pick this if...
Pick Base44 if
- You want the least setup. The database, logins, hosting and analytics are already part of every app, even on the free plan.
- You're building a practical tool for a small business: a client portal, a booking or inventory app, an order tracker, an internal dashboard.
- You want a free app that stays up. Every Base44 app gets a free
.base44.appaddress from the moment you create it, the free plan allows up to 5 apps, and Base44's pricing page says you can ship complete apps on it. We didn't find a time limit on free apps in its docs. - You want a low yearly price. Starter is $16 a month billed yearly and lets you connect your own domain.
- You'd rather edit by clicking. Base44's docs say manual visual edits (dragging elements, changing layouts, typing text into the editor) don't use credits.
Pick Replit if
- You want to see and learn from the code. Replit builds a normal code project, with files you can open, a Git history, and a database you can query.
- You might want to leave later. Replit's help docs show how to download any project as a ZIP, or you can push it to GitHub, and keep working in another tool. On Base44, downloading the code needs the $40 Builder plan, and that code still needs Base44 to run.
- You're building something other than a web app. Starter covers web and mobile apps; Core adds other kinds of projects too (Replit lists data visualizations, slide decks and animated videos).
- You want to plan before building. Replit's Plan Mode lets you talk through the work without changing code, but it needs Core.
- You already know you'll pay, and want the most room per month. Core comes with $20 a month of credits toward stronger models, plus Free Mode for everyday work.
Still not sure? Both have $0 plans. Build the same tiny app in each (say, a sign-up form that saves to a list) and keep the one that confused you less. Comparing Base44 to Lovable too? We covered that pair in Base44 vs Lovable, and Lovable, Bolt and Replit in Lovable vs Bolt vs Replit.
Credits and usage limits, in plain words
Base44
- Two kinds of credits. Message credits are used when you chat with Base44's AI to build or fix the app. Integration credits are used when your app uses Base44's built-in services, like sending an email or generating an image.
- No fixed cost per message. Base44's docs give rough ranges: about 0.5 credits for a small text or style change, about 1 for a small feature, about 2 for a bigger module, and about 3 to 4 for a change across the whole app. They say these are estimates, not a quote.
- Free plan resets daily and monthly. You can use up to 5 message credits a day, up to 25 a month. When you hit the daily limit, building pauses until the next day.
- Paid plans reset monthly on the day you subscribed, and unused credits don't carry over.
Replit
- Starter (free): you get daily credits for Agent, up to a monthly cap, plus monthly credits for cloud use (a production database, file storage and publishing). Replit's docs don't list the exact amounts, so check your Usage page in Settings.
- Free Mode: everyday Agent work at no extra cost, within an allowance. On Core and Pro, that allowance refreshes every five hours. Core's pricing lists "up to 30 hours of chat on Free Mode."
- Power and Max modes use your monthly credits. Replit charges by effort: a small bug fix usually costs less than a big new feature. Replit says it asks before a request moves from Free Mode into a mode that costs money.
- Credits also pay for hosting. On Replit, your monthly credits cover publishing, data transfer and database storage as well as Agent. You can set usage alerts and hard budget limits in Settings, which is worth doing on day one.
Neither company gives a simple "X apps for $Y" number. Base44 shows credits used per message in the AI chat; Replit shows usage in Settings > Usage.
Publishing: the Replit 30-day catch
This is the biggest difference on the free plans, so it gets its own section.
- Replit Starter: you get 1 free published app. Replit's Starter plan docs say "This published link will automatically go down after 30 days." It also shows a "Made with Replit" badge. Core gives you unlimited published apps and lets you remove the badge. Publishing more than one app needs Core or Pro.
- Base44 Free: each app is live on a free built-in address (
yourapp.base44.app) that you can rename at any time, with no DNS setup or payment. When you're ready, you click Publish to put your latest changes live. Connecting your own domain starts on the Starter plan.
So if you want to build something on $0 and leave it running for people to use, Base44's free plan is the better fit. If you're fine paying $20 a month once the app works, Replit's limit stops mattering.
How to give each tool your project rules
Both tools let you write down your rules once, so you don't have to repeat "don't touch the other pages" in every message.
Base44: Custom Instructions
In the app editor's AI chat, click More options (bottom right of the chat), then Custom Instructions. Type your instructions one per line and click Save changes. Base44's docs say they apply to every prompt for that app, on the main version only (not on a branch). A short starter:
This app is [one sentence: what it is and who it's for].
Change only what I ask for in each message. Leave other pages alone.
For anything bigger than a small change, explain the plan first and wait for my OK.
Users can only see and change their own data unless I say otherwise.
Secret API keys never go in front-end code.
When you finish, tell me what changed and how to check it.

Replit: replit.md
Replit's Agent creates a replit.md file in your project's root folder when you start a new project, reads it on every request, and may update it as the project grows. You can edit it, or make your own. Replit's docs say it has to be in the root folder to work. If it gets messy, delete it and start a new chat, and Agent writes a fresh one. A short starter:
# replit.md
## About this app
- A small web app for [who it's for] that lets them [the main thing it does].
- Version 1 only needs to: [the ONE thing it must do].
## How to work
- Explain your plan before you change anything big.
- Make one small change at a time, then tell me how to test it.
- Don't add new packages without asking me first.
- Keep API keys in Secrets, never in the code.
- Keep the current design: same colors, fonts and layout.
For rules that should apply to every project, Replit also has Workspace-wide Custom Instructions (Settings > Customization). The full project version is our Replit Agent rules template, or build your own in the free rules generator.
Matching kit: MVP Spec-to-Build Pack ($7)
The free rules set the boundaries. The MVP pack gives you the build order: a 1-page spec to fill in first, then 7 prompts in sequence (skeleton, review, login, database, security, one feature at a time, polish), plus a "did I leak user data?" checklist.

Moving on later
Lots of people start in a builder and later want to keep going in a coding tool like Cursor or Claude Code. Here's how each one handles that, from their own docs:
- Replit: choose Download as zip from the three-dot menu at the top of the file tree, or use Replit's Git tools to push the project to GitHub. Then open the folder in Cursor or Claude Code. Replit's docs also say that when it works on a GitHub repo, it reads the repo's
AGENTS.mdandCLAUDE.mdfiles. - Base44: on the Builder plan or higher, you can download the code as a ZIP or turn on two-way GitHub sync, then clone the repo and edit it locally. Builder and up can also connect Claude Code, Cursor or Codex straight to the app's cloud copy through Base44's CLI or MCP server, with no local copy needed. The catch: Base44's docs say the exported code still uses Base44 for your data, logins and integrations, so it's "a copy of your code, not a way to move your app off Base44."
Not sure which coding tool to move to? See Cursor vs Claude Code vs Codex for beginners. Our Lovable to Cursor or Claude Code guide walks through the same kind of move from Lovable, and most of the steps carry over.
Next step for Base44 or Replit: Agent Skills
Skills are folders your AI coding agent loads only when the job comes up, and Claude Code, Cursor and OpenAI Codex all read the same SKILL.md format. The Vibe Coder Skills Pack ($9) is 6 ready-to-copy SKILL.md skills (fix-one-bug, stop-the-loop, leak-check, ship-check, explain-project, builder-handoff) for Claude Code, Cursor and OpenAI Codex. Also included in the 6-kit bundle.
