Lovable credits explained (and Bolt tokens): what they cost and how to waste fewer
Short answer: Lovable charges credits for the work its AI does. On the free plan you get 5 build credits a day, up to 30 a month. A Plan mode message costs about 1 credit, and a small Build mode edit costs less than 1. Bolt charges tokens, which track how much text the AI reads and writes. The free plan gets 1 million tokens a month with a 300K daily cap. On both, the cheapest habits are the same: plan first, ask for one change at a time, and stop retrying broken fixes.
How Lovable credits work
Lovable uses one credit balance for five kinds of use:
| What you're doing | What it uses |
|---|---|
| Plan mode and Build mode messages, plus generated images and videos | Build usage |
| Chat mode and Chats (including Lovable in Slack or Telegram) | Chat usage, covered first by a daily chat allowance |
| Hosting your app and its built-in backend (Cloud) | Cloud usage, covered first by a monthly Cloud grant |
| AI features inside your published app | AI gateway usage, covered first by a monthly AI grant |
| Connectors billed through Lovable (like Perplexity or Firecrawl) | Connector usage, covered first by a monthly connector grant |
What a message costs
| Mode | Cost |
|---|---|
| Plan mode | 1 credit per message, plus any research it runs while planning. Never changes your code. |
| Build mode | Depends on the work. Lovable's examples: "Make the button gray" 0.50, "Remove the footer" 0.90, "Add authentication" 1.20, "Build a landing page with images" 2.00 |
| Chat mode | Priced per message, usually a fraction of a credit, and covered first by the daily chat allowance. Lovable calls this chat pricing temporary (it runs through Oct 31, 2026) and subject to change. |

Free plan vs Pro
| Free | Pro | |
|---|---|---|
| Daily build credits | 5 a day, capped at 30 a month | 5 a day, no monthly cap |
| Monthly credits | None | From 100 a month ($25 monthly, or $250 a year) |
| Monthly Cloud / AI grants | 20 / 4 credits | 20 / 4 credits |
| Top-ups | No | Yes (they last 12 months) |
- When it resets: daily credits refresh at 00:00 UTC, which is 8 PM Eastern (7 PM after the clocks change in November). Unused daily credits don't carry over.
- The free-plan catch: daily credits are capped at 30 a month. Lovable's own example: on Free, "you receive daily build credits for the first 6 days each month (6 × 5 = 30), then none until the next month starts." So the free plan is best for trying Lovable early in the month, not for building a whole app.
- Rollover on paid plans: unused monthly credits roll over while you stay subscribed, but each batch expires 2 months after it was issued (on monthly billing).
- Order used: the daily and monthly grants are spent first, then your general credits, oldest first.
How Bolt tokens work
Tokens are small pieces of text. Bolt uses them when it reads your prompt and your project files, thinks, and writes code. Most of the cost is Bolt reading your project, so bigger projects cost more per message.
| Free plan | Paid plans | |
|---|---|---|
| Allowance | 1 million tokens a month, max 300K a day | Depends on the plan; no daily cap |
| Resets | Monthly on the 1st; the daily cap resets every day and doesn't stack | On your renewal date |
| Rollover | No | Unused tokens roll over and stay valid for 2 months (while subscribed) |
| Buying more | Upgrade | Upgrade, or "Reload tokens" on the top monthly Pro plan or any annual Pro plan (reloads don't expire) |
Hit the daily limit on the free plan? You can still edit code by hand in Code view for free, or wait for tomorrow's reset. If you cancel a paid plan, you lose its tokens, including rollover, when the billing cycle ends.
10 ways to waste fewer credits and tokens
1. Plan first, then build
In Lovable, a Plan mode message costs 1 credit (plus any research it runs) and never changes your code. In Bolt, Plan mode uses fewer tokens because it doesn't change your project. A plan you agree on up front prevents the expensive rework later.
2. One change per message
Lovable's own examples show small edits costing less than big ones: "make the button gray" is 0.50 credits, a landing page with generated images is 2.00. Big vague requests cost more and are harder to undo.
3. Say where, and what to leave alone
"Only change the home page. Keep the existing styling." Fewer files touched means less work billed, and fewer surprises.
4. Save your rules once
Put your style and project rules in Project Knowledge (both Lovable and Bolt have it) instead of repeating them in every prompt. Free template: Lovable Project Knowledge.
5. Don't keep clicking "Attempt fix"
Bolt's docs warn that each attempt uses tokens. After one failed fix, switch to Plan mode and ask for causes (prompt below).
6. Undo with version history, not a prompt
Restoring an earlier version in Bolt's Version history uses no tokens. Asking the AI to "put it back" does.
7. Use buttons instead of prompts
Clicking Publish or another built-in action doesn't use tokens; asking Bolt to do it does.
8. Edit small things by hand
On Bolt's free plan, direct edits in Code view don't use tokens, even after you hit the daily limit. Fixing a typo yourself is free.
9. Turn on connectors only when you need them
Bolt says connectors add information to the context, which raises token use.
10. Keep the project small
Most Bolt token use comes from reading and syncing your project files, so bigger projects cost more per message. Delete unused files and split huge ones.
Two prompts that save the most
Don't build anything yet. Use Plan mode.
I want to [one sentence: the change or feature].
Give me a plan in 3 to 6 small steps, list the files you'd touch, and tell me which step is riskiest.
Ask me any questions you need first.
That fix didn't work. Stop trying fixes.
Add detailed logging around [the broken part] so we can see exactly where it fails.
Then list three possible causes, how to check each one, and which is most likely. Don't change anything else until I pick one.

Which is cheaper for a beginner?
It depends on how you work, and the units aren't directly comparable, so we won't pretend to rank them. Lovable's credits are easier to predict per message. Bolt's free plan gives a big daily allowance, but each message costs more as your project grows. If you can, try both on the free plan with the same small project.
